Latest From Lillian

Our June Membership Luncheon at Snug Harbor Club, Little Creek, was a real treat for all of us.  A big thank you to all who helped with the arrangements at the club.  Ms. Seipel and her staff made us feel especially welcome.

A heartfelt thank you, also, to Debbie, Nancy, Andrea, Sherrie and all of the models from the Navy Exchange who took part in the gorgeous Fashion Show.  Our own  models were Kay Palko, Norma Armfield and Margaret Bascom.  The charm,  skill and grace offered by all made this event very special indeed.

With Flag Day just past on June 14 and the fourth of July right behind, more attention is given to our Flag and for what it stands.  Article II of our Bylaws states a.o., “The object of this Society shall be to stimulate love of our country and our Flag”.  As military wives we always have been,  and always will be,  aware of the pledge that our husbands made to protect and honor it.

Our next luncheon on July 13, 2006, at the Broad Bay Country Club at Lord’s Landing, will give us a chance to learn about the “FOLDS OF THE FLAG”.  The Sojourner’s Freedom Foundation will take us back to the War of Independence when Colonial soldiers wore tri-cornered hats which became emblematic of the folding that is still practiced today.

I look forward to seeing you then.

As a military custom, the flag is lowered daily at the last note of retreat. Special care must be taken that no part of the flag touches the ground. The Flag is then carefully folded into the shape of a tri-cornered hat, emblematic of the hats worn by colonial soldiers during the war for Independence. In the folding, the red and white stripes are finally wrapped into the blue, as the light of day vanishes into the darkness of night.  This custom of special folding is reserved for the United States Flag alone.
