Sharron
and Anthony D’Angelo
|
Sharron was born on a dairy farm near Hale, Michigan. After graduation
from Michigan State University with a degree in home economics education,
she joined the United States Navy
Women's Officers Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Her first
assignment was to Eastern Sea Frontier Staff in New York City.
It was a long way from the farm! There, she met Lt Anthony V. D’Angelo
when the admiral invited all the newly assigned officers to his office.
At the end of her tour of active duty she returned to the Detroit area
to teach at Warren Woods High School.
In l965, Sharron and Tony were married and they were sent to Norfolk,
VA. where Sharron taught school at Aragona Elementary School while Tony
served on the USS Mountrail. After a two year tour at US Naval Shipyard
in Portsmouth, orders took them to San Diego, CA where the USS St. Paul
carried Tony to Vietnam twice while Sharron attended grad school at San
Diego State Univ. Ordered to Sasebo, Japan, Tony served as operations officer
of Fleet Activities for four years. Son Anthony Jr. was born there. Returning
to Tidewater, they settled on Overholt Drive in Kempsville while Tony served
his final Navy tour as operations officer at Naval Base Norfolk. He continued
to work for various military contractors for many years.
During all this time, Sharron was active in military officers wives
clubs, volunteered in the Red
Cross, all the schools her children attended and remains an active
member of Church of
Ascension. She has one son and a daughter, Gianna. Her advice to
Navy wives is to be willing
to share your husband with the “ladies” who are their ships. |

Commander
Gary Williams is Air Boss of
the
Aircraft Carrier Truman In the Mid-east.
|
Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW-3) is embarked aboard Truman and is
providing close air support and conducting intelligence, surveillance
and reconnaissance (ISR) missions over Iraq. The Truman Strike Group
is on a regularly scheduled deployment in support of the Global War
on Terrorism. Cynthia was, in her own words, a “Navy
brat”, moving every two years or more. As a child she lived in Italy, where
she learned the llanguage, and in Scotland, where she was a Highland Dancer.
She met Gary in 1989 as a stewardess for Southwest Airlines. They
were married in Annapolis at the Naval Academy in an exciting military
wedding in 1990 where Gary had graduated in 1984. Cynthia is
a stay at home mother with Valerie (10) and Logan (7).
Cynthia Williams’ mother, Connie Breslau, is the Navy widow
of the late Warrant Officer Bruce Breslau, formally of the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission and then with the DOE, where he was a Nuclear
Engineer. Cynthia’s brother, CDR Jeff Breslau, is the PAO
(Public Affairs Officer) for 5th fleet, in Bahrain. What a family! Go Navy! |

LEGISLATIVE
REPORT
|
|
By Sally Saunders
Benefits Issues:
Some members of Congress are arguing that military benefits bills which
were recently approved, are using funds at the expense of other DOD programs.
During a verbal exchange between Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) and the House Military
Quality of Life and Veterans Affairs Appropriation Subcommittee hearing,
Rep Kirk claimed that there was no military value in spending money on
military dependents and retirees. Reps. Chet Edwards (D-TX) and Allen
Boyd (DFL) rebuked Kirk’s impression. They asserted that the nation
must protect current service members in order to retain a sustainable force.
Boyd also claimed that our government has a duty to care for and sustain
the concerns of family members and veterans in order to maintain retention
and readiness.
SBP Briefing
A briefing on issues concerning (SBP) was presented by MOAA to House
legislative staffers. One of the issues pertained to the delaying of the
effective date of 30 year paid-up SBP coverage until 2008. Retirees
who signed up for SBP before 1978 will pay iinto the system for more than
30 years. This is an inequitable way to treat older retirees, MOAA claimed. |

Charity
Committee Report
|
|
Boo Thiele
At its March luncheon, ROWS unanimously voted to name the Chisolm Hospitality
House Foundation as its 2005 charity. The Charity Committee, intent on
our contribution making a difference, considers organizations which serve
our specific community and all the uniformed services. The Chisolm
Hospitality House serves all members of the armed forces or their families,
active duty or retired, who need a home-away-from-home while being treated
at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. It is totallly supported through individual
donations and the $15.00 a night fee for lodging. Chisolm House’s
six two-bedroom apartments are fully furnished and equipped and have no
length-ofstay or distance requirements. Built in 1989, the facility
that predates Fisher Houses, is currently undergoing renovation. New furniture
has been donated, but the need for new appliances, window treatments, and
everyday operating expenses exists. ROWS’ contribution of $1,000
will be spent at the discretion of the Foundation Board which operates
the Chisolm Hospitality House. Mary Johnson, director of the Foundation,
was overwhelmingly appreciative and suggested a plaque to honor ROWS’ generous
contribution. President Anne Kraine pledged that Rows would underwrite
the cost of a plaque , so that the entire grant amount be spent promoting
the good works of Chisolm Hospitality House. |
