Marian Fuchs
Photo and article by Marian Watson
|
| Forty-nine years ago, Marian Fuchs gave up her job as a private secretary
in Baltimore to marry Lt.j.g. Peter Watson. She became a full time Navy
wife and never looked back. They started out on destroyers in Newport,
R.I. Then traveled across country to more sea duty in San Diego. In 1963
they were ordered to Athens, Greece as part of jUSMAG. There Marian served
as treasurer for the Officers’ Wives group where she worked with dollars
and dracs. After 2 1/2 years the family, which by then consisted of 2 sons
and a puppy, returned to the U. S. and once again drove across country
to San Diego and back to sea duty. This was Vietnam time and the ship made
2 WESTPAC cruises in 18 months. Then on to Mayport, FL where Pete
took command of the destroyer PERRY and promptly took it back to the gun
line in Vietnam. In 1969 the family headed to Washington DC and the Pentagon.
After almost 5 years the Watsons headed for their first ever tour in the
Norfolk area. When his 30 years were up, Marian and Pete moved to Massachusetts
where he taught Marine Engineering at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
In 1991 they moved back to Virginia Beach and Marian joined ROWS. She has
been on the Board since 1995. In her free time she has given hundreds of
hours of volunteer time to the Red Cross, Navy Relief, Meals on Wheels,
schools and churches. For hobbies she sews, knits, does counted cross stitch
and sings in choirs. Marian and Pete have two sons and 3 grandsons. |

LEGISLATIVE
REPORT
By Sally Saunders
The proposed FY 2005 Defense Authorization Act including provisions
to eliminate the social security offset under the Survivors Benefit Plan
(SBP) has passed the Senate and the House.. The bill increases the annuities
paid to survivors of military retirees who are 62 or older from 35% to
the following percentages:. Beginning October, 2005- March 2006-40%, April
2006-March 2007-45%, April 2007-March2008-50%, April 2008-55%..The president
has just signed this bill as of October 19, and now we can celebrate!
Many people have worked very hard getting this passed and we all need
to thank MOAA who put tremendous pressure on our leaders in a national
campaign. Please let them know how much we appreciate their efforts.
Medicare Part B premiums will rise in 2005 from $66.50 per month to
$78.20 per month. This represents a 17% increase, the largest premium increase
in the program’s history. Medicare Part B premiums have increased by 64%
since 2001. The Part B deductible will also increase from $100 to
$110 and Medicare Part A deductible will rise from $876 to $912. |

| PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
THANKFUL? YOU BET!
It’s that time of year when we take stock of our
lives and offer thanks for our blessings. For the big holiday, we usually
practice family traditions, right? I’ve gotten myself into a bit of trouble,
trying to do just that. My daughter-in-law has invited me—no, truthfully,
she has agreed to my suggestion—to contribute an Appalachian Dried Apple
Stack Cake to her bountiful Thanksgiving dinner in Southborough, MA. Now,
my version of stack cake consists of twelve teacake layers, each filled
with a dried apple mixture like apple butter. Sorta like a nice round torte,
you know. So how do I get that cake to Boston? Hold it on my lap? Put it
in a big box with Styrofoam peanuts? You see my bit of trouble, don’t you?
Whatever, I am thankful for ROWS, for our warm
and welcoming network of members, and for the efforts of our officers and
board in support of our organization. Happy Thanksgiving!
--Anne Meek Kraine, President

From Vietnam to Hampton Roads:
Poetry Is Alive and Well
It's hard to believe that a retired Navy Commander, who flew more than
600 combat missions in Vietnam as a Seawolf, would turn his hand to teaching
and writing poetry, but that is just what Pete Freas has done. He captures
some of his Vietnam experiences in his book Boots: Echoes of Vietnam, and
he has gone on to write about friends, family, nature, and growing older.
Pete will describe his adventures and read a few poems to illustrate them.
He will also invite ROWS members to submit their own poems, photographs,
and artwork for the 2005 edition of Skipping Stones, the annual anthology
published by the Chesapeake Bay Poets. |
