Audrey and Marv Kufahl
Picture and story by Audrey Kufahl
|
Audrey Schwantes Kufahl was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. After
graduating from Chicago Teacher’s College Audrey became an airline stewardess
flying on both domestic and international flights.
When flying on international flights Audrey then made her home in Manhattan.
Audrey returned home in Chicago and started to teach school.,,,yet still
she thought “Why not try to get a commission in a Naval Air Reserve Squadron?”
Audrey and a friend drove to Glenview Naval Air Station but she didn’t
find anyone who could tell her where to go or with whom she should speak.
However, she did meet the Navy pilot, Marv Kufahl who was to become her
husband a year later. She become Marv’s wife and she also became mother
to a wonderful eight-year-old son, Theron. Marv reported to Ellyson Field
to learn how to fly helicopters before reporting to the Air Station in
Argentia- Newfoundland. That was quite an experience! Then later, after
three years at McGuire Air Force Base, the Kufahls found themselves headed
for Naval Air Station, Norfolk. At the end of his duty at NAS, Norfolk,
Marv was transferred to the base a short distance away- COM NAV AIR LANT.
Marv was flag pilot on 1018, (the Admiral’s airplane) a job he took great
pride in. Audrey taught school and was able to obtain her Master of Science
Degree in Elementary Education. In 1991, she was chosen as the Outstanding
Elementary School Librarian for the State of Virginia. While at AIR LANT
the Kufahls made many friends and Audrey remains friends with them to this
day. After Marv’s demise in 1978, Audrey chose to to make Virginia
Beach home. Today she lives in her home with a lovable 100 lb. Golden
Retriever, Brandy. |

| PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
Step Up to the Plate!
When 1st Vice President Beverly Skinner Smeltzer
suddenly had bypass surgery, we were all shocked and distressed. Beverly’s
commitment to ROWS has been phenomenal, and ROWS members return great affection
to Beverly. Thank Heaven, Beverly is now well into recovery. Still, it’s
a good idea to “keep those cards and letters coming,” as well as prayers
for her full recovery.
In this situation, several ROWS members became
pinch hitters, taking on various responsibilities for following up on Beverly’s
plans. Marguerite Felt has provided last year’s program records—an excellent
source of detailed information. Nancy Corner is staging the Fall Fashion
Show, drawing on her own fashion-show experience. I have been working with
Grand Affairs re the contract, and Ruth Geel has provided a summary of
program budget expenditures to date so that I can monitor expenses as we
go.
We will continue to work together so that ROWS
members can enjoy the wonderful slate of meetings that Beverly organized
for our pleasure. She will soon be back with us, but for now we want to
lighten her load, so that her energies can go to regaining her health.
There will be more chances to help out, so step up to the plate, ROWS members!!
Being a pinch-hitter is not all bad!
--Anne Meek Kraine, President
