VIGNETTE
GIL
AND ANNE KRAINE
“TWO
DIFFERENT WORLDS”
|
|
| On January 8, 1996, Anne met Gil, and for Anne it was love at first
sight. Gil was a tad more cautious. After all, they came from different
worlds. Gil grew up in NYC and graduated from the Coast Guard Academy,
serving on five different Coast Guard Cutters at different times and places.
After serving at the Loran Station at Palau, he obtained his master’s in
naval engineering from M.I.T. He served three tours of duty at Coast Guard
Headquarters in Washington and became Chief of Staff at the 5th Coast Guard
District in Portsmouth, then District Commander. Following retirement,
Gil received his MBA from ODU and held several positions in shipbuilding
and defense contracting until his second retirement. In Tennessee Anne
taught Head Start, kindergarten, first grade, and middle school. She received
her master’s in elementary education and her doctorate in curriculum and
instruction from the University of Tennessee. She served as principal,
supervisor, then managing editor of Educational Leadership. She was assistant
superintendent in Virginia Beach; then worked in Washington for a private
group serving the National Center for Education Statistics. Now she manages
education projects for the Commonwealth Educational Policy Institute at
VCU. Now, after eight wonderful years of marriage, Anne has introduced
Gil to genealogical research in the South, which entails visiting every
cemetery in every county. And on the ROWS trip to NYC last December, Gil
gave Anne the grand tour of Manhattan at Christmas time. When not touring
each other’s different worlds, they work out at the gym, enjoy books and
movies, entertain friends, kids, and grandkids. |

| In appreciation of ROWS' generous contribution and support, a brass
plate was placed on the reverse of the two main doors of Chisolm Hospitality
House. The house serves active duty and retired military personnel and
their families who are being treated at Portsmouth Naval hospital.
The engraving on each is highly visible. The plaque reads:
God Bless This House And Those It Serves
In Appreciation Retired Officers’ Wives of Tidewater

KAY’S KORNER
Kay Palko, President
As we start a new and exciting year, I am honored
to serve as your President.
My board and I welcome your comments and suggestions
to make our Club better. You asked for something different, so my first
vice presidents have been working hard to provide a variety of luncheons.
My goal for the year is to bring in new members,
and make our meetings a joy to attend. I still need some congenial ladies
to serve:
Activities Chairman: to plan and organize special
trips and activities.
Historian: to collect all articles, pictures and
memorabilia for the year, which is usually turned into a president’s book.
Hospitality committee members:
Legislation Chairman: to keep us aware of legislation
that concerns us.
Publicity Chairman: and committee members: to
get the notices of our meetings in the newspapers and out into the community.
I know some old solders tell new recruits to keep
your head down and don’t volunteer, but I am telling you to hold your head
up, call me and say I am ready. Remember to mail in your membership form
or have it filled out for the next luncheon. We have been having
trouble with postal delivery of the newsletter. Just remember if you don’t
get yours our luncheons are always the second Thursday of the month. So
by the end of the month call our new reservations chairman Nordie Crews.
See you next month at the Duck Inn. |
