Amish farmlands tour and the Kitchen Kettle village plus the Choo Choo
Barn. Costs per person double occupancy 10 in a group or more $213, Per

Audrey Kufahl and Pat Kiser are working on arrangements
for the coming year. Still under discussion are wonderful possibilities,
such as a visit to the Atlantic City Antiques and Collectibles Fair in
October, a December trip to New York City for evenings at the theater (and
a little shopping), and an excursion to the spring flower show in Philadelphia.
Audrey and Pat are zeroing in on the details for the New York trip—if we
can sign up 25 people, we will have a bus exclusively for ROWS. This trip
would take place during the week of December 6-10.
The Christmas Dinner Dance is December 3. |

LEGISLATIVE REPORT
Jean Ford Murphy
FY2005 Budget: Keep Those Cards & Letters
Coming!
In late March, House and Senate passed their
respective versions of the budget with provisions aimed at relieving the
SBP annuity. The Senate provided real budget authority; the House offered
a promise.
Contact your representative; call MOAA’s
toll-free hotline at 1-877-762-8762 ask for your representative’s office;
tell the staff member you want your representative to sign Rep. Chet Edwards’
(D-Texas) discharge petition on H.R. 548. (A discharge petition forces
a bill out of committee to the House floor when a majority of members sign
the petition.)
Or e-mail MOAA’s website asap http://www.moaa.org/legislative/SBP/.
Commissary & Exchange Benefits.
In March the House Armed Services Total Forces
Subcommittee held a hearing to examine the current state of Morale, Welfare,
& Recreation (MWR) and Commissary programs. Rep. John McHugh (R-New
York) expressed his belief that MWR programs, especially Commissary and
Exchange benefits, are powerful retention and readiness tools. Don’t forget-
call your legislator! |

GOING STRONG, GROWING STRONG
At our May meeting, Jeannette Maygarden admitted
that the Society was truly “a gleam in her eye” when she single-handedly
founded ROWS in 1973. In her retrospective on that day, she traced the
history and development of our Society—and in a marvelously entertaining
style.
As I listened, I couldn’t help but think that
Jeannette is a good example for all of us. It’s been a long time since
1973, you know? But Jeannette remains a lively, vital, warm-hearted woman
fortified with optimism, all-around “smarts,” and a good sense of humor.
She is still our leader, a person we are always proud to know!
The entire meeting was a celebration of our common
experiences and our support and understanding for each other. ROWS is still
going strong and growing strong!
And now we’re off on a new year, with great appreciation
for Beverly’s leadership. Somehow I feel like saying “Happy New Year!”
Know what I mean?
You have honored me by selecting me to return
as your President. We face the usual challenges: Bringing in new members,
expanding the numbers of members on committees, and ensuring more great
programs!.
The year holds great promise for ROWS, and I appreciate
the confidence placed in me. Remember to keep me up-to-date on any concerns
and issues you may have, and please consider volunteering for some “do-able”
committee task. ROWS needs all of us to make this truly a happy new year. |
